Editorial Review

Toledo offers no pool tables, nouveau-anything cuisine or mutiple-martini menus. In fact, it's a perfectly ordinary bar. But just try to get in there after 10 on a weekend night. You're likely to be asked to wait outside until enough of the twenty-something crowd drains out to put the place under its fire-code occupancy limit.

This unpretentiousness may explain its appeal on a strip of 18th Street in Adams-Morgan dense with "theme" bars where the decor upstages the drinks. Yes, the '50s gas-station-kitsch look here is a bit contrived in itself, but it's positively understated compared with, say, Cities or Felix across the street. Beer selection is the usual round of Rolling Rock-plus-microbrews, with food of the grilled or fried kinds available as well.

While you're waiting for the overworked bartender to notice you, gawk for a second at the accumulation of junk behind the bar, which in the past has included such curiosities as a breakdown of a customer's $300-plus bar tab.
