Let's face it: Those 4 to 7 p.m. happy hours don't really mesh with Washington work culture. This means that days when you're working late (which, for some of us, is pretty much always) may not be very happy, or very cheap.
Some bars and restaurants, however, realize that not everyone can make it for discounted drinks at the usual time and offer deals that stretch late into the night. If you find yourself looking for a cheap beer or cocktail after dinner, head for one of the places listed below.
(By the way, Virginia residents: State law makes it illegal to offer happy-hour discounts after 9 p.m., so I'm not ignoring the Commonwealth on purpose.)
The stylish new H Street bar, which opened in February, offers a $5 boilermaker with Old Overholt rye whiskey and a can of Natty Boh beer. Pair that with the late-night food menu, which might include grilled wings with sriracha or hand-cut fries with curry mayo.
Bullfeathers doesn't mention its late-night "reverse happy hour" on its beer menu, and a host says, "We don't have a happy hour" when I ask about it at lunch. But Bullfeathers' happy hour does exist and is the Hill's best for beer lovers: Choose a small "pony express" pour of any of the 31 drafts for $3 per glass from 8 p.m. to close. This obviously isn't much of a deal if you pick Rolling Rock or Bud Light, but Bullfeathers' rotating taps include seasonals from Long Trail, Goose Island, Founders and Starr Hill, plus a mix of Belgians and IPAs. The crowd is usually suits and Hill staffers who have been burning the midnight oil -- or keeping the drinks flowing from the earlier happy hour at Tortilla Coast next door.
Ceiba's lively yet relaxed atmosphere, comfortable lounge and deeply discounted Caribbean cocktails have made it one of my favorite after-work date spots for years, but it's just as good for those who are looking for some late-night deals.
Every day finds a different house cocktail marked down from $9.95 to $5 from open to close, including caipirinhas on Tuesday and margaritas on Fridays. The daily happy hour runs from 3 to 6 p.m. and then picks right back up after dinner, with $5 specialty cocktails and half-price bar food -- don't miss the queso fundito, which bubbles in a lava stone bowl ($6), or the crispy Mexican fish tacos ($6).
Happy hour features $5 cocktails, wine and draft beers.
This Maryland brewery doesn't actually make beer at its Bowie location, but a dozen of its ales are always on tap. The late-night (and all-day Tuesday) happy hour takes $2 off all beers and wines.
Lincoln's cocktail menu was created by John Hogan and John Miller, the duo behind Annapolis's Level lounge, which guarantees that you'll get a solid mixed drink anytime you stop in. Monday through Wednesday, a limited selection of $5 cocktails at the late-night happy hour includes a delicious mai tai using Trader Vic's original 1944 recipe, and New Orleans's classic sazerac, made with rye whiskey and Vieux Carre absinthe. There's a separate (and not very discounted) menu of late-night snacks to pair with your beverages.
Smoke and Barrel slashes prices on its outstanding American and European draft beer selection on Friday and Saturday nights. Prices drop $1 off the list price at 10 p.m., $2 at 11 and then $3 from midnight to close. With most prices usually between $6 and $8, savings can be substantial. The caveat: To keep the crowds in check, bartenders require you to give them a password, which you can find on the Smoke and Barrel Twitter and Facebook pages.
