Best live jazz without crowds or cover charges

Fritz Hahn  |  Updated 02/23/2011

When you go out in the middle of the week, you can skip the cover charges and minimums that have become de rigeur on a Saturday night.

Live Music at Bayou

Washington, DC

At the Bayou's second floor lounge, live jazz deservedly takes center stage. Listen to some of the finest young jazz players in Washington and you may find yourself neglecting your drinks and food -- even though the oyster po'boys at this New Orleans-themed restaurant and bar are good.

Live Music at Bistrot Lepic

Washington, DC  | 8/22

Cozy, candlelit and featuring a great wine list, this wine bar is a favorite date destination. With the addition of Wednesday jazz night, it just got better.

Not-So-Modern Jazz Quartet

Alexandria, VA  | 8/23

This group has made St, Elmo's its home since 1998. You'll find a jam session spirit, pure swing and Dixieland music that you rarely hear at jazz clubs and a crowd ranging from senior citizens to 20-somethings tapping their feet as they type on their MacBooks.
