A renaissance already has begun in the Shaw, LeDroit Park and Bloomingdale neighborhoods,which surround the Howard. Walk a few blocks in any direction and you'll find several restaurants and bars, many of them opened in the past few years.

The tiny joint with the renowned pumpkin curry and other home-style Southern Thai dishes doubled its size in 2011 and ceased being a carryout, instead requiring diners to settle in for five courses selected by chef Taw Vigsittaboot.

This stylish, rustic bar, with exposed brick, trendy tin ceiling and long list of beer choices, has rapidly become a popular watering hole for the new residents of the Bloomingdale neighborhood, thanks to the refined bar food and convivial vibe.

The neighborhood's pioneering coffeehouse attracts all sorts of laptop types by day. But the quaint little space also has proven an avid supporter of the community, becoming home to a small Bloomingdale Farmers Market.

 
 
 
 
 

Bistro Bohem

Just a block from the Howard Theatre, Prague native Jarek Mika opened this cozy 35-seat restaurant and bar in mid-March, serving Eastern European dishes (pierogies, beef goulash, etc.), Pilsner Urquell beer and cocktails laced with absinthe and Czech liqueurs. Crowds begin arriving at happy hour (5-7 p.m. weekdays) and stick around. Brunch is served Saturdays and Sundays.

 
 
 
 
 

Shaw's Tavern

The quaint tavern around the corner from the Howard certainly has location, but it didn't have a liquor license for months after opening. But the hiccup seems to have smoothed over, and Shaw's Tavern is now serving dinner as well as brunch and lunch -- and yes, the hard stuff.
