In buttoned-up Washington, displays of affection are rarely public. But out-of-the-way spots see plenty of action.
The soot-colored walls, practically nonexistent lighting and heady cocktails all make this by-reservation pseudo-speakeasy one of the best places in town to steal a kiss - or maybe it's just the easiest. In a bar this dark, who'd notice?
On a warm day, finding a spot around the waterfall at Meridian Hill Park is the start of a pleasurable afternoon getting to know each other. Hidden from the street but possessing an awesome view, the park has a way of setting the mood for a kiss. For a show, go on a Sunday in the spring or summer, when there's not just plenty of people-watching, but also the weekly drum circle, one of Washington's institutions. The impromptu performances continue from afternoon to around dusk.
Every couple dreams of an island getaway; while it's not exactly Bora Bora, in the spring, this 88-acre island nature preserve is an escape within the city, an ideal place to set out a picnic and kiss a little.
Exploring Kalorama's rich Embassy Row and hidden museums is a wonderful way to pass a day, but no trek through the neighborhood is complete without a stop at this secluded set of steps and fountain built in the early 1900s. At the top, there's a little park with a view of some of the embassies; it always feels like finding a hidden treasure.
