Best places to go if you're under 21

Interns keep Washington humming by day. These places welcome the almost-legal crowd at night.

Comet Ping Pong

Washington, DC

Customize your own thin-crust pizza with toppings including fennel sausage and broccoli rabe at this upper Northwest restaurant, which is decorated with overhead art and shows videos of Ping-Pong matches on oversize screens. Then head to the back for a round of Ping-Pong or foosball. There is no time limit for tables, so you may wait for a while. Balls cost 50 cents. All ages.

Soussi

Washington, DC

This Moroccan-decorated hangout features a hookah (water pipe) menu with flavors including strawberry and mint. Feel free to mix and match, and grab a seat on the outside to do some prime people-watching. 18 and older Sunday-Wednesday only.

Kramerbooks & Afterwords Cafe

Washington, DC

Dupont Circle bustles 24 hours a day, and Kramer's is no exception. The vast bookstore and charming cafe are both open 24 hours on Saturday and Sunday. Peruse the store's impressive selection and then gather on the patio for a late-night dinner or delectable dessert. All ages.

U Street Music Hall

Washington, DC

The nondescript late-night venue boasts great DJs and music performances; those between 18 and 21 must purchase tickets in advance for events on Friday and Saturday, but are welcome without reservations for weeknight events. Bust a move in one corner, or grab a pho dog and watch the crowd breakdance in another. Pace yourself; guest DJs don't take the stage till after midnight.

Ultrabar

Washington, DC

Dress to impress for the four-level music club near Chinatown. Different genres, such as Spanish or techno, play on each tier once the place becomes packed, around 11. Make laps or stay in one spot - but come to dance, not to talk. Print out a pass online for reduced admission. 18 and older.

Busboys and Poets

Washington, DC

The original 14th Street location of these restaurant/bookstore/performance venues has become a fixture in the District. On the menu at each site are pizza, apple pie, free Wi-Fi and late-night hours; all three venues also host open-mike nights and community discussions. Whether in a group or flying solo, you will feel at home in the friendly atmosphere. All ages. Hours vary by location.
