Some of the Going Out Guide's favorites for the weekend: concerts with jazz trumpeter Christian Scott, a festival for lovers of crabs and beer, an all-star lineup paying tribute to the the Godfather of Go-Go and the unveiling of three new DC Brau beers as party of D.C. Beer Week.
An evening with Smithsonian National Zoo keepers, scientists and vets watching cheetah cubs. Includes food and beverages.
Like to eat crabs? How about 40,000 of them? Bring the family to this outdoor extravaganza featuring Maryland's best crustaceans, beer, music, arts and crafts and a family area with balloon art and face-painting.
The late Chuck Brown's annual birthday concerts at the 9:30 Club were epic. The hours-long shows featured Brown, of course, but also a cavalcade of go-go stars performing to pay homage to the Godfather. This Saturday's concert should blow the roof off the Walter E. Washington Convention Center in a similar fashion. In addition to Brown's longtime backing band, the Original Soul Searchers, the bill includes a who's who of go-go groups: Trouble Funk, Hot Cold Sweat, E.U., Backyard Band, Junkyard Bard and Suttle Thoughts. Brown's daughter KK is among the hosts.
The tagline of this 18-and-old comedy night is "bust a gut, not your wallet." Sit back and support D.C.-area comics like Yaser Al-Keliddar, Chelsea Shorte, Mike Larrick and Ralph Cooper.
Trinidad & Tobago marks its golden jubilee on August 31, and lots of Washington's Trini and Tobagonian expats get an early start at the celebrations this weekend at Yards Park. The free marathon fete features DJs, performers and steel bands, as well as island-themed food and drink.
Austin trio Deep Time has an expert understanding of the dynamics of space within a song. The group doesn't stuff its songs with dense arrangements or distracting layers of noise. There's no security blanket present on its self-titled album from this year, and that vulnerability is what makes it work so well.
DC Brau has been busy collaborating with brewers far and near in the past year, and the trailblazing District brewery will three new beers in three days during D.C. Beer Week. The most anticipated (for me) is Fight Club Anti-Gravity Lager, a collaboration with Devils Backbone Brewing. DC Brau brewer Jeff Hancock and DBBC brewer Jason Oliver were regulars at Fight Club, the underground skate park off Blagden Alley. In honor of the much-loved (and now-closed) skater hangout, they've created a Fight Club beer. The tapping party at Breadsoda will feature skate videos, skate-rat-friendly tunes and the first kegs of the 7.2 percent alcohol lager.
If the exotic beauty and rich cultural traditions of Cambodia fascinate you, but you're unlikely to venture halfway around the world anytime soon, don't miss this chance to see classical dances, folk games and art while sampling Cambodian food.
From August 13-19, enjoy fixed price lunches and dinners at dozens of local restaurants. Lunches will run you $20.12 and three-course dinners will be served for $35.12, which doesn't includes beverages, tax or tips.
Jazz trumpeter Christian Scott is as likely as anyone to become the new face of the genre. He's talented and charismatic enough to make non-jazz fans take notice, and he has enough respect from other jazz artists to reach its upper echelons
Bikram Yoga Dupont hosts another summer of free weekly yoga classes in Meridian Hill Park; held on Sundays, the event gets its soundtrack from the drum circle nearby. Classes may be canceled due to inclement weather; check the studio's Facebook page for cancellations.
