Debuting in 1989, the D.C. Arts Center’s annual “1460 Wallmountables” exhibition is like a miniature Artomatic ---- the art show in which anyone who wants to can display work ---- but with one difference: The art has to fit inside a 2--by--2--foot square. The work can stick out into the room like a sore thumb (and sometimes it does), but as long as it fits, it hangs.

On Friday from 7 to 9 p.m., the latest edition of DCAC’s summer showcase will open to the public, with a cash prize awarded to one artist for “best use of space.” The show can be full of surprises, not the least of which is this: Some of the work is actually quite good.
