More than 80 scenes of London, the adopted home of American painter James McNeill Whistler, will be featured in an exhibition opening Saturday at the Arthur M. Sackler Gallery. Focusing especially on representations of that city’s iconic waterways, “An American in London: Whistler and the Thames” is the first major museum exhibition to focus on Whistler’s earliest paintings of the city that would come to inspire some of his most atmospheric ---- and almost abstract ---- renderings.
