Marie van Goethem, the teenage ballet student who posed (around 1879 or 1880) for Edgar Degas’s sculpture “Little Dancer Aged Fourteen,” is the subject of a new musical, “Little Dancer,” premiering at the Kennedy Center on Oct. 25. Before you see the stage show, check out the work that inspired it at the National Gallery of Art. Centering on the museum’s original beeswax statuette, the exhibition “Degas’s Little Dancer” opens Sunday in the West Building. In addition to the 31
4--foot sculpture, the small show will include 13 other ballet--themed works by Degas.
