Of all our physical attributes, there is little that affects self--image like our hair. Artists think about this too, even when they’re not looking in the mirror.

On Sunday from 4 to 6 p.m., the Athenaeum will host a reception for its latest exhibition, “Hair Apparent.” The thematic group show looks at hair from many angles, and includes sculpture, photography, assemblage and performance. During the reception, attendees will be invited to contribute locks of their own hair to an installation by Caryl Burtner, a wonderful Richmond artist whose work centers on the documentation of life’s small rituals ---- in this case, years’ worth of her own haircuts, collected in plastic bags.
