I don't know anything about Bach or whatever but the music was beautiful and expressive and showed me something I've not heard in a long time... something new... not just pop-culture-derivative junk that goes in one ear n' out the next. This stuff is sticky, ya know? Would like to hear it all again, actually. Was talking to the band and djs a bit and it was super cool to find they were all branching from the same source material... more like jazz improv I guess (the world I know better). I looked it up and all and those who are curious should check out their site at www.pierismusic.org. Classical ain't my thang by any stretch but this is something different... and I was there for the very first show and that's pretty cool! : )
kno i'm prob one of few who fully "got" the bartok-meets-bach-meets-Debussy thing that the lumia ensemble pulled off... crowd grooved on it but doubt most realized the depth (sorry, elitist classical thing in me can't help it)... but even without the intellectual back flips performed for those "in the kno"... who could enter the Hirshhorn transformed as it was that night, with full video spread, and not be BLOWN AWAY?
Wasn't sure what it was trying to be at first: dance party, chamber concert, light show? Had a few drinks under the covered area (raining, Hirsh inner circle is exposed). Figured it out after staring at this water themed video projection nearby (or maybe the drinks made sense of it for me?). Doubt they wanted the rain (lol!) but did enhance the water motif and no matter by the end cause hundreds were dancing soaking up both music and H2O. Slick live video behind performers and music wasn't your standard party crap... violin/piano/laptop trio did some really beautiful slow stuff and djs built to an uptempo climax. Guess some gave up early with the rain, or didn't get it conceptually. Those peeps should stick to standard clubs!
Sorry guys, I couldn't really get into it. Water water everywhere and a long expensive line for a drop to drink. Looks like some really dug the risky conceptual thing with the music but I was just shivering and wet and where were the dance tunes to warm me up? Went inside and security was kinda rude when I got too close to a sculpture so went back outside and was still wet and cold... this time beats were going and some dancing but not for me. Video installs near the bar were nice though. At least we had something to look at while waiting for overpriced bad drinks! But seriously, the rain kinda killed it for me.
I doubt the guys from Pieris Music wanted the rain, but maybe they were asking for it? The pre-press said it was all riffing on a water theme, the music, the visuals, everything. Certainly came through with pond projections and other water projections. Think I heard some water samples in the dj sets and maybe even a Debussy thing in the piano too? But looking up to see light rain illuminated by the party lighting and rippling on the pond below it seemed nature was determined to show up the party planners. No bother, after things got going we were all dancing in the rain anyhow. Lots of fun!
So the party vibe under the covered area was pretty average, except for the really amazing video projections that attracted lots of curious attention, but mostly just hipsters checking each other out and all. But the 2nd party, in front of the stage, was stellar... literally dancing in the rain by the end. That party took a while to get going since the djs kept things ambient at first and the classical stuff was more reflective/cerebral (and sometimes really beautiful, but not really danceable). The djs battling the downpour emerged victorious in the end, with a good crowd in the 2nd party that eventually said screw the rain and gave into the groove. Was a great party in the end. Do hope it doesn't rain on them next time though!
Violin and keyboard and laptop and more laptops... Was kinda hard to tell what was happening under the rain tarps (djs were covered tent style in a last minute rain solution) but I spotted at least 4 computers on the audio rig... So they clearly weren't doing a pop dance thing and I guess those who don't know IDM at all would be baffled. And if they don't know classical maybe baffled there too. Lots of risk taken and pulled off in the rain too... I enjoyed the mix of styles and wish more "events" programmed music that did something interesting like this.
So, it did start slow... lots of frantic looking artists and staff running around dealing with (apparently unexpected???) rain... but things REALLY warmed up as the party progressed (well ok, it was pretty cold temp wise, but you know). Don't know why people think they should be able to walk through the gallery with a drink tho... don't understand that the interior art is delicate I guess? Whatever... those of us outside were dancing in the rain for the last two hours. I'll be back!
Basically, paying $18 for bad music, scenester crowds, and the privilege of paying bar prices for drinks at a museum I go to for free any day? No thanks. This experience has soured me on one of my favorite museums in the area.
Part of my gripe about the event no doubt has to do with the fact that the weather was chilly and rainy, but prior to going to the event, I searched onlin extensively to find more info about the event, but didn't have much luck. I thought the whole point of the evening was to be able to have your drinks and walk around the galleries, but food annd drink were not permitted insde. Also, the event lasts til midnight, but galleries close at 10, with security guards clearing them out at least 15 minutes before that. The drink selection is poor (wine, Stella, and a mojito punch). I also read somewhere that the ticket price used to include a drink ticket or 2, but the nearly doubled new prices only get you in the door. Continued...
