Painter Laura Elkins specializes in self-portraiture. Then again, she doesn't.
The Washington artist, whose latest exhibition opens at the Fridge on Saturday with a reception from 7 to 9 p.m., paints herself, but in the guise of first ladies. (You'll recognize Jackie Kennedy's famous pillbox hat in one.) However, they're not entirely straight-faced pictures of presidents' wives either, seeing as the subjects are depicted in various states of undress and with such unorthodox props as a gun.
"Laura Elkins: White House Negligee" runs through Jan. 30 at 516 Eighth St. SE (rear alley). Can't make the opening? Stop by Jan. 22 at 5 p.m. for a conversation between the artist and collector Henry Thaggert. 202-664-4151. www.thefridgedc.com . Free.
