Editorial Review

Here Harry Lee drafted his famous farewell address to George Washington after his election to the presidency; later he memorialized his old war chief with the deathless phrase, "First in war, first in peace, first in the hearts of his countrymen." The museum features magnificent gardens and exhibitions of early Victorian furniture. From 1937 the house was owned by labor leader John L. Lewis, from whose estate it was purchased by the Virginia Trust for Historic Preservation.
