Works by area painters Michael Sellmeyer and Lauren Boilini are the focus of two new shows at Visarts, which will host a reception for both artists’ concurrent solo exhibitions on Friday from 7 to 9 p.m.
Sellmeyer gets the big upstairs gallery, where he’s showcasing abstract paintings, drawings and prints inspired by the muscular forms and weathered surfaces of rocks, crumpled paper, wood and other humble objects. Boilini will be showing her more figurative work in the art center’s smaller, street--level gallery. This may strike some as ironic, given that her large--scale images are sometimes as wide as 20 feet across.
