Every year, the Friends of the Torpedo Factory Art Center, an arts promotion and programming group affiliated with the Old Town Alexandria studio building, honors one of the several resident artists who work in the center with the title of artist of the year. This year’s winner, chosen by artist, critic and curator J.W. Mahoney, is Ruth Gowell, who as part of her prize will receive a solo exhibition in the Torpedo Factory’s Target Gallery.
On Thursday from 6 to 8 p.m., the gallery will host a public reception for “Optical Studies,” an exhibition of the artist’s glass and fiber abstractions that Mahoney has compared to the art of the Washington Color School. Gowell’s work can also be seen where she works, in Studio 8 of the art center.
