On Saturday, the National Portrait Gallery opens the third edition of its prestigious triennial portrait competition, which this year features entries in such media as rice, glitter and thread, along with the more traditional genres of photography, video, drawing and painting.
The 48 works in the “Outwin Boochever Portrait Competition 2013” were winnowed from more than 3,000 submissions. The contest’s $37,500 purse for the top three winners includes, for the grand-prize winner, a $25,000 check and a commission to create a portrait of a living individual for the museum’s permanent collection.
