D.C.'s biggest art museum long shunned photography. Recently, it has used its burgeoning collection to assemble tight shows such as "The Streets of New York." The previous Western culture capital gets its due in "Paris in Transition," which traces the development of the medium from the mid-1800s through the 1920s. Photography was modernity's window into itself, and as Baron Haussmann shaped the city, artists such as Louis-Emile Durandelle and Charles Marville chronicled the changes. And, yes, if quiet walks are your turn-on, there are samples from Eugene Atget's extensive catalog of monuments grand (Notre Dame) and plain (Pont Marie).
