Photographer Robert Weingarten -- whose 2006 show at the Corcoran Gallery of Art spotlighted his series of close-ups of artists’ palettes and paint-spattered studio floors -- has come up with another equally oblique means of portraiture. He has created digital collages of objects and other figures that his subjects have identified as representative of who they are.

On Monday, “Pushing Boundaries: Portraits by Robert Weingarten” opens at the International Gallery of the Smithsonian’s S. Dillon Ripley Center. A presentation of the National Museum of American History, the show features 16 of Weingarten’s composite portraits, including one of the late actor Dennis Hopper that features a motorcycle and an image of Mao. (The Chinese leader is symbolic of Hopper’s contemporary art collection, which boasted one of Andy Warhol’s famous silkscreens of the Chinese leader.)
