American tonalism -- shadowy paintings in muted hues -- became a gateway to Japanese art for patron Charles Lang Freer. His namesake museum explicitly shows the connection, exhibiting works by American artist Thomas Dewing alongside Japanese pieces Freer collected in the late 1890s.
