Vivien's work displayed at the Jerusalem Fund Gallery is something of a novelty. It really is the first time that anyone has captured so beautifully the faces and work of the modern-day Palestinian farmer in the context of what is called agro-resistance. Vivien's photographs reveal the intimate relationship she has with her subjects, the trust between them, and their deep connection and commitment to the land. Anyone who has not been to Palestine will walk away with a very real sense of what Palestine is and why it's so important to protect it.
As someone coming from Palestine, I have no doubt that Vivien, through her photographs, has managed to bring to all those who do not know Palestine a live, accurate and clear image and representation of the beauty of especially rural Palestine... If only her photos could speak. Great job Vivien... I am really proud of you and your fabulous work...
This is an amazing exhibit! Vivien Sansour's photos reflect her connection with the land very well. All pictures were taken over the span of two years and it is obvious that her subjects trust and know her very well. Colors and composition are beautiful as well; the gallery seems much brighter thanks to the bold colors of her photos. The exhibit is well worth seeing just for the beauty of the Palestinian farmland.
Ms. Sansour beautifully photographs her Palestinian subjects, olive farmers from Nablus and Jenin. Her work captures intimate moments with the farmers, clean images that juxtapose the purity of the land with that of their people. With care to develop a relationship with the men and women in her photos, Ms. Sansour draws on personal familiarity to open a penetrating insight and proud display of their strength under occupation. Yet, the work is not a reminder of their misery, but an exploration of the hope that drives these farmers to exercise their national agency. If you have the chance, visit the exhibit at The Jerusalem Fund Gallery.
Vivien's photography is amazing! I was privileged to meet Vivien on her home soil in Palestine in Jenin. During our time together, I visited some of the sites depicted in her exhibit. I especially enjoyed meeting many of the women and men olive farmers. I highly recommend viewing her exhibit. You might be moved to purchase one of these treasures.
This exhibit is wonderful! First of all, Ms. Sansour is an incredible photographer. She really gets to know her subjects before taking photographs of them, and it shows in her work. Second of all, this exhibit looks at an important and often ignored non-violent element of resisting the Israeli occupation of the Palestinian territories: agro-resistance. Ms. Sansour shows the importance of farming to Palestinians in the West Bank and how they resist the occupation by simply cultivating their land. Finally, the dips, spreads and olive oil available at the exhibit opening were delicious and straight from the farms that were being photographed!
