Places to Take Newcomers

Some of the places I like to take newcomers -- cool DC places, not necessarily tourist locations.

1.

Visit in the day if you want to go inside or visit at night to see the outside illuminated.

2.

An important part of US identity. And one of the best places in the DC area to photograph fall leaves. Not to mention the view of the city from the Lee House hill.

3.

Now famous (or was it always famous?) U Street institution. In the midst of yuppy gentrification, this is old DC.

4.

Fun (but noisy) French bistro at the north end of Dupont Circle. Great mussels, pate, and other reasonably-priced fare.

5.

Beautiful Chinese teahouse unexpectedly on Wisconsin Avenue below M Street in Georgetown. Good for afternoon tea or a light weekend lunch.

6.

Fun warm weather place to browse through row after row of random junk for sale.

7.

Great Spanish tapas at Gallery Place/Penn Quarter. Nice for late afternoon outside dining.

8.

Not in the most scenic part of town but great water lily display in mid-late summer. Love the marsh/wetlands boardwalk too.

9.

Definitely feels grand and historic. Perhaps a little touristy.

10.

Vegetarian and Korean food a short walk from the Takoma metro station. Nice neighborhood hangout and great for weekend brunch/lunch
