Editorial Review

Every city needs a classic "black box" space for small troupes producing avant-garde theater on no money. This is Washington's. Located in restaurant- and club-filled Adams Morgan, the Arts Center is both a gallery and a theater space. The entry is up a steep, narrow stairway, and getting to the theater involves briefly leaving the building and going down another set of stairs. Seating about 50 people, the DCAC theater, with its black walls and folding chairs, is minimalist to the max. This is a place to see people taking risks and sometimes succeeding against the odds of poverty and cramped space.
