Supporters of the District's historic Brewmaster's Castle apparently have saved the 19th-century mansion from the threat of foreclosure and sale. In the past 45 days, about 2,000 people contributed more than $203,000 to rescue the former Dupont Circle home of brewmaster Christian Heurich, said Gary F. Heurich of Friends of the Castle.

"That's the community yelling at the top of their lungs that they value the castle," said Heurich, a grandson of Christian Heurich.

In January, the landmark -- which is open to the public for tours, weddings and other events -- faced foreclosure unless $250,000 was raised to pay mortgage interest that was owed. The public response was enough to get an extended deadline from the bank and a likely refinancing of the mansion's $5.5 million mortgage, Heurich said.
