On Thursday at 6 p.m., the Phillips Collection will host a panel discussion on the work of painter Jules Olitski (1922-2007), an American modernist whose simple but often lyrical abstractions will be featured in a pair of concurrent exhibitions opening Saturday at the American University Museum and the Luther W. Brady Art Gallery of George Washington University.

Olitski worked both large and small, and both extremes are on view. AU’s “Revelation: Major Paintings by Jules Olitski” focuses on the artist’s more expansive canvases, while the Brady Gallery’s “Jules Olitski on an Intimate Scale” explores the painter’s smaller though no less powerful images.
