Maryland Brewer's Oktoberfest

Editorial Review

Who needs Munich when you have beer from Maryland? This annual festival offers a chance to try 16 of the Free State's best breweries and brewpubs, including the Brewer's Art, Heavy Seas, Flying Dog, DuClaw, Oliver and Franklin's.

Organized by the same company that puts on Das Best Oktoberfest at National Harbor, the Brewers' Oktoberfest features much of the same entertainment (and is also not too kid-friendly) -- a Best Beer Belly contest, the naming of Miss Oktoberfest, a mix of funk and cover bands and traditional German music. The highlight is the wife-carrying contest, a Scandinavian tradition where a man runs an obstacle course while carrying his wife on his back. The winning couple takes home the wife's weight in beer.

Tickets are $20 in advance ($25 at the door) and include a souvenir mug and six beer tokens. Get three extra beer tickets free for wearing German attire. Additional tokens are $1 each. The VIP tickets ($35 in advance) offer admission at 11 a.m. and six extra drink tokens.
