Those who ventured down to the tidal basin last year for the National Cherry
Blossom Festival may have entirely missed the festival's namesake. Peak bloom
arrived a full two weeks earlier than average, and those resplendent pink flowers
came and went with the rain just days after the festival began. It's impossible to
predict peak bloom this far in advance, but here's hoping the blossoms hang on a
little longer this year to provide that ever-stunning backdrop for the festivities. A
brief rundown of dates to bookmark:
-March 23: Opening Ceremonies
-March 23-24: Family days at the National Building Museum
-March 30: Blossom Kite Festival
-April 5: Party with the artsy at Cherry Blast
-April 6: Fireworks light up the Southwest Waterfront
-April 13: Japanese Street Festival and National Cherry Blossom Festival Parade.
