When Smudge, a new comics art expo, debuts at Artisphere this weekend, don’t expect the name--brand pop--culture celebrities and superhero--costumed attendees of a comic con. The upstart micro--festival aims to spotlight the art of indie comics, not the commerce, inspiring attendees to consider becoming visual storytellers. (Smudge’s idea of a “special guest” is Ben Hatke, a classically trained artist from Front Royal best known for his “Zita the Space Girl” series of graphic novels.)
In addition to several comics artists showcasing their wares in Artisphere’s Ballroom, the free expo will feature presentations in the Black Box theater on animation, editorial cartooning and art journaling, as well as hands--on workshops in the Education Lab.
