The library of the National Museum of Women in the Arts is a hidden gem, not only for its reference materials, but also for its somewhat unheralded exhibition programming, which regularly focuses, albeit quietly, on book art. A show opening Monday spotlights the work of Czech artist Helena Bochoráková--Dittrichová (1894--1980), who is widely acknowledged as the first female graphic novelist.

The First Woman Graphic Novelist: Helena Bochoráková--Dittrichová” will feature four of the artist’s wordless picture books ---- which she called “cycles” of woodcuts ---- as well as one unpublished collection of prints, the semi--autobiographical story “The Artist on Her Journey.”
