For oenophiles looking for something grander than the usual tasting, Barrel Oak hosts this cool, formal, seated tasting with food pairings at the adjacent Oak Hill Estate, a historic home that, in the 18th and 19th centuries, belonged to Supreme Court chief justice John Marshall (it's the first time the home has been opened to the public).

Our Review

Step inside a little bit of history in this estate that's been refurbished for formal wine tastings. Upon arrival guests, are offered a sumptuous menu to choose from tastings of Virginia wines, Barrel Oak's higher-end wines, or wholly European offerings. Each wine is paired with small bites such as sopressata with dried fig, or a tart brimming with mango salsa. Reservations are required for the weekend tastings, and guests can choose their own price range ($25 to $75 a person, through Oct. 28). The tastings not only include wines from across the globe, but also heartier pours, with each flight kicking off with sparkling wine and ending with a sip of Madeira.
