The National Mall

Editorial Review

The National Mall is the product of the open space and parklands envisioned by Pierre L'Enfant's plan for the capital city. Anchored by the U.S. Capitol and the Lincoln Memorial, the green expanse, with its clear pools and seasonal blooms, is an impressive mingling of the natural and cultural resources of the city.

The site of many Smithsonian museums, art galleries, memorials and the Washington Monument is also home to popular annual events like the Smithsonian Folklife Festival, the Fourth of July fireworks and the Kite Festival. Everything from dog shows and movies to ultimate frisbee and club sports can be found on its greens. Plus a carousel in warm weather and a skating rink in the cold months.
