Editorial Review

This 2003 film, an Oscar nominee for Best Documentary, shines light on the life of rapper Tupac Shakur, who was gunned down in 1996 in Las Vegas. It's not an easy task: Shakur, the son of a Black Panther Party activist, hailed from a performing-arts school and had shown sensitivity as an actor in addition to his status as a high-rolling purveyor of party songs. Interviews with Shakur, home movies and more piece together his story. The movie is shown in conjunction with the National Portrait Gallery's "Recognize!" exhibition. Free. Doors open at 6:30 p.m.; show at 7. (The film is rated R for strong language and images of drugs, violence and sex.)
