This park is located on the Occoquan River across from the town of Occoquan. It offers 400 acres of recreational space and a touch of the past, including reminders of the women suffragettes imprisoned there in the early 1900s.

Last year at this refuge just across Belmont Bay from Mason Neck State Park, birders counted 100 bald eagles gathered around an ice shelf to hunt in open water, recalls Jim Waggener of the Northern Virginia Audubon Society. Begin at the refuge's gazebo -- you can scan the skies and tree lines through the telescope there -- then walk along the shore.
