    Smithsonian Folklife Festival

You'll hear a lot of foreign tongues at this year's folklife festival, which will keep translators busy: Endangered languages are a focus area for the Smithsonian's annual folklife festival, which is working to make sure these voices aren't lost in translation. Visitors will get a chance to learn some new vocab words from speakers of rare languages in America -- like Passamaquoddy basketmakers from Maine -- and abroad -- like Koro rice farmers from India. The other two cultures featured in the festival will be Hungarian heritage and African American style and identity, which will explore the broad diversity of black style, from hip hop to traditional African influences. With fashion designers, milliners and jewelers participating in the festival, it could be a chance for a shopping spree.
  • 7/22 - 8/12

    Screen on the Green

The big daddy of outdoor film screenings returns to the Mall between 7th and 12th streets NW for its 15th season of classic movies under the stars. The schedule is as follows: July 22nd: "E.T."; July 29th: "Norma Rae"; Aug. 5th: "Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory"; August 12th: "Tootsie"
