Editorial Review

This twenty-screen megaplex, owned and operated by Consolidated Theatres, opened in 2004 and still feels quite new. Only a block away from the artsy AFI Silver Theatre and Cultural Center, the Majestic is the place to go to see first-run, mainstream movies in a clean, comfortable and classic setting.

Located on the corner of Ellsworth Drive and Fenton Street, the Majestic's red and purple neon signs are hard to miss. To avoid a wait on a busy night, you can use one of the lobby's electronic kiosks to purchase tickets, or pick up tickets that you've already ordered online. The second level of the building is where you'll find all of the auditoriums and two refreshment bars. Most of the fare is pretty standard (popcorn, candy and soda), but more substantial offerings include pizza and nachos.

All 20 of the Majestic's theaters have wall-to-wall screens and stadium seating. The chairs are tall and comfortable, with armrests that can be raised. Half of the theaters have Dolby Digital Sound, while the other half are equipped with DTS.

While ticket prices are as high as $9.50 for an adult evening show, the Majestic offers a few family-friendly deals on weekdays. Every Wednesday, the theater designates its first matinee showings of two features as "Movie Mom's Club" events, where crying, nursing or sleeping infants and their guardians are welcome. During the summer, on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays at 10 a.m., second-run children's movies like "Curious George" and "Shrek 2" are screened. Tickets are $1 per child, and adults are admitted free.

The Majestic is a short walk from the Silver Spring Metro, and ample parking is available in two nearby Montgomery County garages for those who choose to drive. Both garages are free on evenings, weekends and holidays. The Majestic's central location in Silver Spring may tempt you to stick around after the movie; plenty of shops and restaurants (as well as ice cream meccas Ben & Jerry's and Cold Stone Creamery) are literally steps away.

Horrible place to see a movie

The Majestic is notorious for the number of noisy, rude audience members -- sadly, not always teens -- who talk nonstop during the show, or who light up their cellphones during the show, or who run in and out of the theater without seeming to care either about the movie or the audience they are disrupting. If you want to enjoy a movie without constantly being distracted by noisy people, go elsewhere. We live only a few blocks away from The Majestic, but we avoid it like the plague.

Loud audiences, no concern by staff

Some of the staff is great, but the rude patrons are just too much for them all. This theater really needs ushers in every theater to control the phone calls and talking. It doesn't seem to matter if the movie is action-adventure where a passing remark during an explosion doesn't make that much difference, or a quiet drama. The theaters never get dark with all the blue texting screens up (NOTICE-your friends don't miss you that much during a 75 minute movie. The world goes on just fine without your less-than-witty comments!)
