Went to my first movie at West End, "Melancholia". The facilities have a charming "home movie theatre" quality--with poufy folding chairs, squished in a little too tightly and a determined clientele of movie lovers. They sell beer, wine and popcorn in the lobby. Audiences are rapt, serious and enthralled. It is true that the facilities are not perfect and the staff is not particularly efficient, but it is also true that these are not the most important parts of a movie theatre, unless they are dreadfully and hostilely carried out. I found the staff kind and helpful, the seats were comfortable and the movie was beautifully visible, good sound, a wonderful experience. Love this place and will be coming back often!
West End Cinema houses three screening rooms showing foreign and independent films that might not otherwise play in this area. For example, they screened the excellent "Autobiography of Nicolai Ceaucescu," which both Landmark and the AFI passed on. While fans of "Transformers 3" will find little to like, West End is a valuable addition to the DC scene for those seeking substance over eye candy.
