These two actors were especially good together, both believeable in their roles. That last flashbulb moment in the cop car said a mouthfull. The story kept proving my circumspection wrong - liked that.
Sullen from your reviewer's diss of Crowes's luscious voice I went looking to fault her. But she got it exactly right. It's good; it's not great; it's complicated and you have to keep up. No bathroom trips for this one. But it's worth your time. (The political debate scenes almost sent me out the door though...arrrgh! Shades of last fall.)
Too many silly plot devices in the second half...I found myself sucked in early but disappointed late. Plot holes are very common--I wonder if the writer/director have ever heard of the Fifth Ammendment and Double Jeopardy? http://pmands.com/broken-city-has-promising-setup-but-then-cracks/
