I'd rather have thoughtful than unremittingly cheerful in a movie. This film provoked a good discussion with my partner, and I imagine among many other of the couples in the theater. The strength of this movie is in its believability: there is no abuse or dramatic betrayal; just a gradual deterioration in communication and intimacy that hardens into estrangement. The only weak part was the easy transformation to happiness that Hollywood demands.
Hope Springs was a well-acted film...how could it fail with Meryl Streep and Tommy Lee Jones? But why does Arnie have so much difficulty with starting his sex life back up? Is it because he's upset about Kay shutting him off so many years ago? It certainly seems like there should be some stronger motivation. Perhaps he's hiding an infidelity or perhaps impotence, but he denies both of those. And Kay acts like a 1950s house wife about sex. Strange from a child of the hippy era. Being the same age, and in a relationship for over 30 years myself, I've encountered the same frustrations. I'm sure a good roll in the hay will conquer all. Hollywood, Hollywood...but who's complaining, at least Kay discovers that there are two kinds of oral sex!
Tommy Lee Jones is a revelation and Steve Carrell gives also a great performance, Meryl, ça vas sans dire. A must see!
Hope Springs is an amazing movie; tender, frank and funny. Streep, Jones, Carell, and just a glimpse of delightful Shue, are certainly at their best. Jone's acting is particularly impressive; hopefully, at the very least an Oscar nomination is in his future. This movie is for everyone in a relationship or hoping to have one in the future. Just go see it!
Tommy Lee was a great surprise in this film. I hope he gets recognition. Streep is always great and Carrell is wonderful. A must see.
