The reader who wants the film to mirror the book - any film, any book - is misguided. Of course films and books are different. Yet the disappointment in the translation of Lee Child's character and this novel comes because Child's creation (and storytelling) is not the bland action character portrayed as 'Jack Reacher'. The problem lies not only in Tom Cruise as (not!) Jack Reacher, but possibly because the filmscript too slavishly follows the novel's plot, whilst at the same time managing to render it 'just the same' as any old action movie we've seen in the last ten years - and in the lower half, at that. The sole saving grace seems to be that no artifice has gone into Cruise's portrayal of Reacher: he's clearly not standing on stilts!
I was expecting an average action flick (mind you, I've read all of the novels). I don't have high expectations for Hollywood adaptations. What I saw on the other hand was a good action flick, a slightly thinking man's action flick (only slightly, but it was there). Critics are ignorant fools who have become dumded down by the steady stream of crap they're served and called cinematic prime rib and no longer recognize a good movie. These same hypocrites praised Hugh Jackman's portrayal of Wolverine; and for all their bleating, the same reason they give for Cruise being miscast as Reacher is true in Jackman's case (5'4" Wolverine vs. 6'2" Jackman). Yet, despite physical miscasting both prove that great acting can overcome just about anything.
I'm a Lee Child fan aka Reacher Creature (wow, that's new). I believe Tom Cruise was a great Jack Reacher. Tom Cruise is our best and only action star. Nobody else could have handled the part as well as Mr. Cruise. Casting was perfect; I wanted to punch all the bad guys. Glad Tom took them all down. Good job! I'm a big fan, of course.
As a fan of Lee Child's books, I was initially concerned about the casting of Tom Cruise as Jack Reacher. However, as everyone knows, movies that try to slavishly replicate their source material invariably fail. Movies and novels are two different things and I was pleased to find out that Jack Reacher not only sustains the spirit of the books but is also an old-fashioned mystery and a credible movie. I enjoyed it thoroughly and look forward to more Reacher movies in the future. AHB http://allsortsofposts.wordpress.com/
A lot of movies entice from the preview cuts. This movie surpassed the tingling feeling I got watching those. Don't know what Ann's beef is with Tom, but keep it business, please. Everyone does there job masterfully in this thriller, including Tom, who at this moment is the best kick-ass roleplayer out there ("on second thought, I'd like to kill you"). See this movie and enjoy the ride and thrill of good guys winning.
Thank God, I didn't listen to the critics' reviews, especially Ann Hornaday's who complained that the camera obsessed over the shooting of the five victims. LOL. Despite some flubs, Reacher is pretty good. The Reachers fans in the audience laughed, and oohed and aahed aloud at all the apropriate parts and a good time was had by all. Cruise got the soul of Reacher right. That's what counts.
Not in this lifetime. This is the most serious miscasting I've seen in my lifetime, and I am 83. I own every Reacher book. I would leave home for this guy, but not as portrayed by Cruise. I am appalled. If you had to have a short guy do 6'5", not particularly good-looking Reacher, then then steal Jeremy from the Bourne movies, at least this man could have acted and not posed his way through the role. Cruise as Reacher...it is laughable, except I am crying.
Hello to my fellow Reacher Creatures. Saw this movie at an advanced screening and was so relieved. Tom Cruise does a great job in a role I really thought he was going to ruin. He's a great Reacher. Very intense, funny, and strong. The script has some wonderful twists (if you haven't already read One Shot). I loved how old fashioned the movie looked and felt. Very raw and intense. My daughter got us invited to the screening and she was so excited because she knows how much I love the books. I bought her a little something extra for Christmas. I hope everyone gives the movie a try. It has a positive message about senseless violence, too. And don't we need that right about now?
