worth seeing
Anticipating something really interesting, imaginative, and provocative, especially after the review by Hornaday and considering it was a Bruce Willis Sci Fi film, I left disappointed. A tired take on time travel and as to the surprise ending - no real surprise - at least to me - it was obvious and predictable in the final scene. Considering Willis' seminal science fiction films, this pales in comparison. Twelve Monkeys was a far more imaginative take on time travel, The Fifth Element was far more imaginative science fiction as well. A better recent time travel or related type of travel movie is the overlooked Source Code of last year, with better acting performances and thematic messages to boot.
I was shocked that Bruce Willis would stoop to being in such a meaningless film. It's nothing but repetitive high powered rifle shots interspersed with jumps back and forth in time that don't add up to a story. Shear trash. The movie seemed like it was four hours long. How and why other reviewers recommended this movie is a complete mystery to me. Next time I'll stay home and watch something on TV.
Looper is the culmination and realization of 35 years of science fiction cinema. It is provocative, thrilling, gritty and surreal. The reviewer is remiss, however, in not mentioning how much Rian Johnson's latest owes to Katsuhiro Otomo as the film's narrative spine is more of an homage to Akira than anything else. Go see Looper. It is a landmark in contemporary sci-fi cinema, and will (hopefully) inspire many to seek its sources.
