I give Mama 2 stars. If you are looking for a movie to scare you and keep you scared, this isn't it. Mama does have its creepy and jump out at you parts. I'll admit I had my face covered for 2/3 of the movie. The last part, however, I was hysterical. Or should I say it was? Mama was animated! She looked like a character from the polar express. She didn't seem real at all. I was embarrassed that I even covered my eyes before then. Mama, in the end, seems defenseless and almost weak. It was a whole different movie. I laughed so hard, I cried. That was how bad it was. And the whole plot of the movie would make you laugh even harder! There was no plot! There are so many holes in the plot I still don't understand what Mama was fully about.
This movie will make you jump if that is what you came for. But if you look deeper you will find a beautiful, haunting stories about mother(s). From smothering, overprotective, caring and abusive the movie tries and successfully shows the effect a mother can have on a Childs life and vice versa. My main gripe would be the CGI, I'm not a big fan of generated monsters, and had hopes that Mr. Del Toro would use a live action creature ala Pan's labyrinth. But besides that, beautifully shot, good acting (especially from the kids), and a story miles ahead of of Hollywoods reboots, remake, and sequels. Mama is a movie that will scare and stay with you after it's done. Like a good parent should.
