I found the story to be compelling, and not so much a rehash of Peter Parkers transformation into Spiderman. The movie stands on it's own, and felt that the movie portrayed the exact emotions that the early sixties charactor does in the comics. A movie with awesome special effects does not cut itself short on the storyline. The Amazing Spiderman has been battling arch enemies for nearly 50 years, some may find that redundant. I was happy to see a story that stayed so close to it's roots. The emotional relationship with Peter Parker, and Gwen Stacey were acted to perfection. Great actors, great script, and brilliant special effects. When you go to see Spiderman, you are going to have a great time in an action movie. Baby boomers win again.
'The Amazing Spiderman' is different from the original - but simply in the addition of 'The Amazing' to the title. The plot follows the same line - with little deviation and well-nigh no invention. The only 'add-on' is technical - because sfx have advanced since the McGuire/Dunst vehicle. Other franchises are capable of invention - distinguishable villains, extensions of the 'goodie overcomes baddie to win' plot. Here, we travel the same ground without the essential character of Peter Parker being further illuminated, or illuminated at all. Martin Sheen and Sally Field are coups of casting, but Garfield and Stone simply do not zing at romanced. McGuire portrayed Parker as a loveable dork - and in my book, dork trumps 'ordinary' every time.
