Housed in what once was the first library built for the black community in Alexandria, this center explores the African American presence in town, from the days of slaves and free blacks (the two lived side by side in Alexandria) to today.

Pick up a brochure here for a walking tour of Alexandria's black historic sites. The center is adjacent to the Watson Reading Room, which holds more than 2,000 noncirculating volumes on African American history. The Alexandria African American Heritage Park is affiliated with the center.
