To reconnect with our earliest memories and impressions -- that is the ethereal musical imagining that Maestro Kluge set before us in the world premier of his exquisite Rhapsody for Lily. This is a rich and imaginative creation in which the beguiling piano melodies convey a childlike simplicity and charm, while the accompanying orchestra and synthesizer add a complex, encompassing and embracing water-like element. Light and lyrical, intimate and assuring, Rhapsody for Lily affirms the promise of life, the promise of beauty, and is a wonderfully unique re-affirmation that music is indeed the "universal language of mankind."
The theme of Sunday's concert was PASSION, and the program provided many opportunities for this topnotch orchestra, under Maestro Kim Kluge, to explore the depths of this emotion. Prokofiev's Suite No. 2 from Romeo and Juliet and Wagner's Prelude and Liebestod from Tristan and Isolde were emotional and memorable.Gershwin's Rhapsody in Blue provided a wonderful change of pace, beginning with that evocative clarinet solo. Kluge was pianist and conductor of this energetic performance. Rhapsody for Lily, a world premiere, was a charming and unique piece. Written by Kim and Kathryn Kluge, it explored sounds experienced by the fetus in the womb. It was an engaging and evocative work. showcasing Kluge's masterful orchestration. VA Music Lover
I was transported in Nature with this piece. The beauty of moving along in water with the sounds of an outer world was a force to be reckoned with. Maestro Kluge is a brilliant composer, conductor and visionary of our time. The Alexandria Symphony preformed this piece flawlessly! Hope to hear it preformed again. Epic performance,
The Alexandria Symphony's Valentine's program last weekend with Prokofiev, Debussy, Wagner, Gershwin and Kluge charmed, surprised and delighted! It was an imaginative program with shinning performances. We'd never heard Rhapsody in Blue so powerfully performed, and we were impressed Kluge conducted at the same time he played the piano. Kluge had the courage to follow with his and his wife's original Rhapsody for Lily, performed for the first time by the Alexandria Symphony. Rhapsody for Lily, which celebrates the birth of his daughter, beautifully drew the afternoon to an end. We loved the piece, a completely original work and sound. I think the standing ovation from the audience showed that they agreed.
