The story of Janka Nabay is an interesting one. As a young man in his native Sierra Leone, he turned the country's traditional bamboo pipe-driven Bubu music into a hypnotic modern dance sound, selling thousands of cassettes around the country. When Sierra Leon erupted into civil war, Nabay fled to Brooklyn. He was working in fast-food joints when he was "rediscovered" by an American public radio producer, leading to a record deal and the formation of a new band. "En Yay Sah" is a captivating album, bubbling with modern percussion, irresistible grooves and an ancient tradition. Janka Nabay and the Bubu Gang are performing for free – free – at the new Tropicalia at 14th and U streets.
