Cate Blanchett stars in Sydney Theatre Company's production of the Tennessee Williams classic.

I find the gushing over a production that the both Cate Blanchett and Liv Ullman have admitted is intended to show Blanche Dubois as being sane, appalling. William's is rolling in his grave as we speak. A little bit of research into William's beliefs and motivations would easily uncover the fact that William's believed the world itself had already gone insane. To suggest that Blanche Dubois who starts the play with obvious symptoms of Post Traumatic Stress Disorder and is clearly self-medicating is not mentally ill is further proof that little has changed since the writing of this play and that William's belief that abuse of all kinds was engrained in the very fabric of society is as valid today as it was when he wrote the play in the 40's.
This production of Streetcar, which I saw at its Sydney Theatre Company run in Sydney, is one of the finest pieces of art I have ever seen - in any discipline. It blew me away in every sense. A breathtaking production and a perfectly realised piece of work.
I just returned home from the Kennedy Center (Friday night November 6) and I am still in a state of frisson, wow, and awe. I have been to approximately 1500 plays in my lifetime. Cate Blanchett's portrayal of Blanche Dubois was the single greatest and most compelling performance I have ever had the privilege of watching. And "watching" is way too passive a term.... I felt every aspect of this tragic character every moment of the play.
Went to see this fantastic performance last night at the KC and it was great. Cate B is such a class act & gave a strong performance. Jennifer Schaus Washignton, DC
Interesting that it takes a cast of Australians, without a hint of accent, to produce the best production of Streetcar I have ever seen. I got a much better understanding of the characters. Cate Blanchette is amazing but the entire cast is strong. Shame on the Post that although they printed an excellent article on the star, there has been NO REVIEW by any Post reviewer.
Saw the play at the Sunday Matinee (11/1). The acting was remarkable -- Cate Blanchett's Blanche dissolves into madness before our eyes. Liv Ullmann's direction uses humor to keep the audience off-balance, making the second act more devastating than had the tone been somber from the start. The set (especially the lighting) was a major character in the production. But it is Blanchett to whom I keep returning, staying in character even as she helped move the props around during the dark scene changes. The play is on a sold-out run at the Eisenhower Theater. Don't skip it if you are lucky enough to have tickets.
