Washington's annual Fringe Festival: a mix of offbeat art, music and theater.

Don’t miss 9/26 3 p.m. last show of this solo/recreation of the silent western film star by Jack Tomalis. It’s a poignant, often funny recounting of the man’s real life as revealed in his letters found by the playwright (Kelly....), Mix’s actual great-grand daughter!
"Pepe! The Mail Order Monkey Musical" is the hottest-selling musical in the festival. The only show with tickets remaining is Friday evening -- and it featured Bravo TV's Top Chef, Carla Hall, in the role of the letter carrier. See why this show has sold out every performance -- in the Fringe's largest venue.
B. Stanley is an artist who has traveled the world honing his craft, taught by bonafide masters and forged in the trenches of guerrilla theatre. B. is that rare actor with balls. Stanley creates a complex persona full of passion, guilt, frustration, awe, admiration and unconditional love for his misunderstood genius brother. His performance reminded me of Mickey Rourke's acclaimed "comeback" in The Wrestler, and not just because it was awesome and might even be a comeback performance in its own right for a revered local actor. Vincent is a play for anyone who has ever loved an artist, and for artists who have ever wondered if anyone sees value in our compulsive labors. landlessapproved.blogspot.com/2009/03/vincent-and-now-for-something.html
Plugging our show as well! Thanks for covering the festival, Jonathan. Pinky Swear Productions presents: Freakshow, by Carson Kreitzer, takes the audience inside the minds of freaks at a 19th century sideshow. What does the woman with no arms and legs think about while she is on display? Can a man who collects and displays freaks be anything but evil? Is there a way out once you are in the show? Find out here. Directed by Lise Bruneau of Taffety Punk Theatre http://www.pinkyswear-productions.com
Just a quick plug for our comedy, RIDING THE BULL, which has a proven track record: the play won the "Audience Favorite Award" at the 2007 NYC Fringe Festival, and our production is a unique collaboration between established DC and NYC artists. Named as one of the Top 10 "Most Promising Shows" on the Post Going-Out Guide. Featuring original music by Curtis Eller ("NYC's angriest yodeling banjo player!"), one of the wildest live performers you'll ever see. RIDING THE BULL is a hilarious and strangely profound play - we hope YOU can join us! http://www.ridingthebulldc.com
I will definitely go see several of the shows previewed at the fringe festival last week. If you're in the mood for a comedy, two plays stood out - Uncorseted looked fun, a love story set in 1893 (men and women in drag sword fighting for love) and so did Irish Authors Held Hostage,(Oscar Wilde is one author held hostage by a terrorist who he seduces with poetry). They both struck me as the stuff Fringe is supposed to promote - fresh artistic expression we wouldn't otherwise see. Soup and My Fab Sex Life also held promise. Sadly, some shows didn't preview well, and I'll probably avoid them: the variety shows, plays by well-known authors challenging even for the Royal Shakespearan Society to produce, and plays with cowboy themes.
