I loved the movie, hate the musical proposal. There is nothing technically good to redeem this piece. I love theater, and after the bubbling opening number on opening night I felt physically ill, really wanted to vomit. The 2 1/2 hours passed with the same tune over and over. The only memorable number was “Is it gay or European?” Very effective, though I understand how people can feel offended. The talent was absent from the book, the music, lyrics, choreography, acting. The chiguagua (do not correct my spelling) was the best actor. I grew up with a mantra that you have to be exposed to everything to build your own taste, but if I can spare anyone the pain and suffering of sitting thru this awful play, I have paid it forward!
I'm sorry, but as a straight, white middle-aged man I'm not quite getting the gay bashing theme complained about by Paul Marks and others. Are you all outing yourselves here? This is an entertaining show that deserves some positive comments. Do I think the lead,Becky Gulsvig, could have a stronger voice? Yes. But she pulls it off with a sweet voice that is always on key and could be amplified better. Choreagraphy, could it be better? Sure. This is an entertaining show, give it a chance. You won't be disappointed.
How can a show that is supposed to celebrate the empowerment of an oft-maligned group (blondes) get away with the blatant homophobia and gay stereotyping that is found in abundance in this vapid and poorly produced show? It's a shame that a show that should be about having fun -- but that also includes a terrific message -- should do so by stepping on yet another group that is often maligned. Other than that, the dancing is good, the technical production is one of the worst in years at the Ken Cen -- bad sound, strange lighting that does nothing to improve the show. I was all for an evening of light entertainment. I came away wishing the Ken Cen would give me my money back. Legally Blonde: Morally bankrupt. Don't go.
