Last September, Biergarten Haus was, to put it mildly, a madhouse. Tuesday nights, Saturday afternoons, Friday happy hours -- there was almost always a wait to get into the huge beer garden. No bar in Washington could match the atmosphere: Groups sitting at long hardwood tables and sipping German beers from weighty one-liter mugs while a band performed traditional drinking songs and costumed dancers whirled around.

This year, there will be German seasonal beers on tap while they last, including Munich powerhouses Spaten, Paulaner and Hacker-Pschorr, selling for $15 to $17 a liter. (The more manageable half-liter mugs are half the price.) Bands perform every Friday and Saturday from 7 to 11 p.m. or so, as well as some Thursdays. There is no cover charge, and no reservations are taken after 7 p.m.
