Editorial Review

At the trim Amsterdam Falafel, the Middle Eastern snack of mashed chickpeas, shaped into balls and fried to a neat crunch, gets slipped into warm pita pockets and dressed up with a choice of nearly 20 toppings. Picture shredded beets, turmeric-tinged cabbage, green herb sauce and eggplant puree -- everything arranged in a colorful salad bar and yours for the garnishing. That said, the fluffy-centered fritters are scrumptious on their own, liberally seasoned with garlic, cumin, parsley and coriander. A sandwich made with three of them costs $3.75; one with five goes for $5.25. As friendly as the guys behind the counter are the hours of operation: This Adams Morgan newcomer is open daily for lunch and dinner, and until 4 a.m. on Friday and Saturday nights.

I had my first Falafel in the Jewish Quarter in Paris and it was pretty darn amazing. Couldn't wait to come back to DC and try it here. This place rocks. Super-friendly service and very inexpensive. I got the small falafel on wheat (topped with Tzatziki, cabbage and tahini sauce) with a diet coke and it was $4 and some change. LOVE that they take Euros. Can't wait to go back - and they gave me a "Frequent Falafel Card" - buy 8 get one free!

My order was quick. The food was fresh and made right in front of me and not behind some secret wall. So many toppings to choose from I was like a kid in the candy store. My 2 biggest likes about this place was the taste and the price. The seating was a little shabby but who needs a seat when you can walk around Adams Morgan with a great tasting falafel.

The falafels are great and the fries are a great side. Top it off with a variety of delicious toppings! The only thing that keeps Amersterdam Falafels from getting 4 stars is the lack of plates and forks! Bring your own paper plates - the falafels are tasty but tend to fall apart. Yum!

I LOVE the Falafel shop. A wonderful late night treat in Adams Morgan. You can make it as healthy (without fries) or unhealthy (add fries) as you like and it is always tasting delicious. Obviously not thought for long formal dinners but if you can arrange yourself with that, it is well worth it. Unlimited peanut sauce for the fries deserves a whole star just by itself. Or, if you are dutch you go red and white (ketchup and mayo).
